Oral surgeons are qualified dentists who have undertaken additional training and qualifications to specialise in surgery of the mouth.

Types of oral surgery procedures

Dental Extractions

including wisdom teeth, impacted teeth, buried teeth and cyst removal

One of the most common procedures an oral surgeon performs is tooth extraction (removal). There are many reasons why a tooth may need to be extracted, such as caries (dental decay) infection or a break in the tooth.

Labial or Lingual Frenectomies

‘tongue-tie’ or ‘lip-tie’

This involves removing the fibrous band of tissue that attaches your tongue to the floor of your mouth (lingual frenum) or the band of tissue that attaches your top lip to your gums (labial frenum).

Minor Soft Tissue Lesions

This involves removing lumps like polyps or partial removal of lesions for diagnosis (biopsy). Polyps are benign lesions in the mouth that are frequently seen and caused by chronic irritation.

Biopsies

A biopsy is a procedure in which the whole lesion (example: lump/bump/mark/pigmented patch/ulcer) or part of the lesion is excised (removed) and sent to a histopathologist for examination under a microscope to confirm a diagnosis.
