Biopsies with Dr Arna Irgens

A biopsy is a procedure in which the whole lesion (example: lump/bump/mark/pigmented patch/ulcer) or part of the lesion is excised (removed). The specimen is then sent to a histopathologist for examination under a microscope to confirm a diagnosis. This may result in the need for further treatment or an onward referral.

Types of Biopsies

+

There are two types of biopsies. Both biopsies are usually performed under local anaesthesia.

Incisional Biopsy

During incisional biopsies only a part of the lesion is removed for diagnosis.

Excisional Biopsy

During excisional biopsies the entire lesion is removed for diagnosis. Dissolving stitches or heat (cautery) are often used to help the area heal. Healing can take a few days to a week depending on the area biopsied.
