There are two types of biopsies. Both biopsies are usually performed under local anaesthesia.
During incisional biopsies only a part of the lesion is removed for diagnosis.
During excisional biopsies the entire lesion is removed for diagnosis. Dissolving stitches or heat (cautery) are often used to help the area heal. Healing can take a few days to a week depending on the area biopsied.
